The onus of responsibility lies upon the consumer. Most consumers are far removed from those who produce & process their food, and one must believe in good faith the food being sold to them is good for them.
This is unfortunately no longer true. Nearly all food sold in the US is produced & processed in a way that is detrimental to your long-term health. No third-party will inform you, and no third-party will hold producers accountable. Any sort of solution to this predicament requires individual action on your part.
Learning how to navigate the ecosystem of modern nutrition is difficult. There is no one method that will let you mindlessly shop, no one brand that can meet all your grocery needs, and many brands that are marketed as healthy have serious flaws. The only approach that is sufficiently robust and dynamic is knowing how to read an ingredient label. If you know what to look for, and what to avoid, you can evaluate the healthiness of any product with no prior knowledge of the brand. It’s almost like foraging.
For myself, it took a lot of time to learn all the “do’s and don’ts” of reading an ingredient label. Hours of pouring through articles from various sources, YouTube videos, and talking in chatrooms and forums. It’s not something the average person has the curiosity for.
This is why I’m creating this podcast. The reason I call it “front-loaded” is because I want you to inform you to the extent you deem necessary, then go about your day. If all you want is a simple yes or no, you shouldn’t have to wait until the end of a two-hour podcast episode. Episodes will be short enough to finish in an average daily commute, and the verdict will be the first thing you hear. Those that are more curious can stay and listen, learning progressively trivial aspects of nutrition and the food industry to their heart’s content. If one doesn’t like podcasts, transcripts will be available to those who prefer reading an article. The end-goal is education, your way, to the extent you deem necessary.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy our content.
